Rick Najera is an award-winning Latino writer-performer-director-producer and author with credits in film, television, theatre and Broadway who will be visiting NYC before he heads to Cambridge to deliver a keynote speech at Harvard Law School. This reception in his honor will have Rick sharing his experiences about what it took for him to accomplish his goals of working in Hollywood.  His inspiring message is powerful and will help you to stop underestimating yourself - or allowing others to underestimate you. His message to all is to "dream big and know that it's up to you to create your own opportunities." It is an especially empowering message that is echoed in his own career path and life.

Rick will also share insights from his new book "Almost White: Forced Confessions of a Latino in Hollywood," including his thoughts on the lack of Latino representation in Hollywood and what can be done about it. According to Najera, "Hollywood is ... most likely a scared, white, 20-year-old boy. This is a problem in writers' rooms," adds Najera, "because the typical Hollywood writer doesn't have experience interacting on a regular basis with people of color."  He adds that a lack of diversity in the writers' room isn't apparent to most audiences, "a lot of times the writers were the guys in the back room. So no one sees us, but they don't realize we're the ones that are changing everything."

As a writer, Rick Najera is best known for his work on MADtv (1995),  In Living Color (1990) and in the Hollywood feature film Nothing Like The Holidays (2008).  Along with John Leguizamo, he is only one of three Latinos to have a show on Broadway, namely his award winning show "Latinologues."  Rick has been featured  in media outlets that include Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Hispanic Magazine, Hispanic Business, Latino Future Magazine, Creative Screenwriter, Latino Leaders Magazine, Latina Magazine, Latin Heat and on television on such outlets as CNN, A&E’s Breakfast with the Arts, PBS’s Life and Times, NBC’s Hispanics Today, Univision’s Aqui y Ahora, Despierta America, Escandalo TV, Primer Impacto and El Gordo y La Flaca, among others. He is a two time Writer's Guild Award nominee for Television Writing Achievement for Outstanding Script in a Comedy/Variety Series in 2003 and 2004.
