Nous Sommes Charlie

A Message from Writers Guild of America, East’s President Michael Winship and Executive Director Lowell Peterson

The Writers Guild of America, East expresses its horror at the murders at Charlie Hebdo. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives.  We grieve with the people of France.

We stand in solidarity with the satirists, the sly social commentators who use words and images to challenge established power structures and belief systems.  It is their job to challenge sacred beliefs, to mock the powerful and the pious, the self-righteous and the misguided – people who get angry and threaten to get even.  Like all social critics, satirists provoke, upset, inspire, and outrage, and they must be free to do so without risking their lives. We might agree or disagree with what they say or draw, we might laugh at their inspired insight or cringe at their poor judgment, but we must defend their right to express themselves.  We must condemn anyone who threatens or commits violence against them. This is the essence of an open, progressive society.
