AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka pressed Salon’s CEO to recognize the Writers Guild of America, East, which is part of the AFL-CIO, in a letter sent Thursday.

“I urge you to voluntarily recognize the Writers Guild of America, East, AFL-CIO based on the authorization cards signed by your entire editorial staff,” Trumka Letter to Salon to Salon Media Group’ CEO Cindy Jeffers.

Last week, Salon’s editorial staff unanimously voted to unionize. Salon’s staff said the union “will solidify Salon’s position as a progressive leader, generate tremendous employee good will, and transform the workplace environment in positive ways.”  Following the vote, the publication’s editor-in-chief David Daley told the Huffington Post that management looks “forward to discussing this initiative with the editorial staff and learning more about their objectives and goals.”

Salon Media Group, however, has yet to recognize the union.

Salon’s decision to unionize came a few weeks after Gawker staff voted in favor of also joining the Writers Guild of America, East.
