From Script to Pre-Production: A NYWIFT Workshop

fs2pAre you a writer-director with a feature-length narrative script you are ready to direct? What will it take to move your project forward?

NYWIFT’s FROM SCRIPT TO PRE-PRODUCTION is for women filmmakers who are ready to direct a narrative feature. Each filmmaker must have written and directed at least one narrative short and have written a feature-length narrative script that’s suitable for production for under a million dollars. The group will be limited to women and will be small enough so that everyone can be familiar with each project. This is a collective endeavor – we will meet weekly to support each other as we work our way through the often overwhelming task of setting up a feature. While we may eventually attract additional producers to help us with our projects – and actors that may expand our budgets – our aim is to help women filmmakers take the next step by equipping them with the tools to set up their work at a low budget level.

We have put together a “curriculum” focusing on the tasks involved in setting up a narrative feature – polishing log lines, synopses and pitches; creating a “look book”; putting together a preliminary budget/top sheet; deciding on locations for tax incentives; forming a C-Corp or LLC; leveraging attachments; and producing a crowd-funding campaign. At each stage, we’ll bring in experts and mentors to advise us. And we’ll work collectively to put together the packages.

We are looking for writer-directors who work well with others and enjoy working in a group setting. This isn’t for everyone. Participants will have to roll up their sleeves and help one another. Think carefully before you apply and only recommend women you feel would work well in this type of format.

Submissions will open June 24 and close August 15. Applicants must submit a narrative short they’ve written and directed and the completed feature script they plan to package in the workshop. Finalists will be contacted in September for an interview and for a recommendation from a film professional. Selections will be made in October. Participants will receive copies of the participating projects November 1 so that all scripts can be read and assignments completed by the first meeting on Friday, January 13, 2017. Sessions will be held at NYWIFT every Friday through June. There is an application fee of $25 for NYWIFT members and members of the WGAE and $55 for nonmembers. While there is no cost to participate in this workshop, participants must be NYWIFT members in good standing. (If selected, nonmembers must join NYWIFT to participate.)

Deadline August 15. 2016.
