Video games are an exciting new frontier for writers, but keeping track of interactive narratives can be a nightmare, even for experienced game developers. How do storytellers navigate the threads of a nonlinear narrative and keep their fiction engaging?

Join Alex Toplansky, Senior Writer at Deep Silver Volition, for a discussion about how interactive storytelling works and the tools of the video game writing craft. You’ll learn why some types of traditional stories translate better into interactions than others, and how a player’s agency is essential to their emotional connection. After talking through some key insights, the group will simulate some of the tools in a game writer’s room and tackle some narrative design challenges head-on.

The course is open to all but some basic knowledge required. Ideally students should:

  • Be experienced writers with an interest in digital content, web content or transmedia content
  • Have experience working in collaborative environments, preferably in production environments
  • Have a firm understanding of Microsoft Excel
  • Be aware of basic video game concepts (multiplayer, open-world, free-to-play, procedural content, user-generated content, etc.)
  • Have a grasp of participatory storytelling forms (interactive theater, role-playing games, improv, reenactment, etc.)
Alex Toplansky has been building interactive products since 2005 in roles ranging from development to production on a number of AAA and MMO game franchises. Before beginning his current role as a Senior Writer for Deep Silver Volition, the studio behind award-winning franchises like “Saint’s Row” and “Red Faction”, Alex was the Senior Narrative Producer at Deep Silver, Volition’s parent and publisher. Alex holds a BA in Anthropology from Brandeis University and a 3d Animation Certificate from Boston University.
