The Writers Guild of America East invites members to attend events happening in Los Angeles and online this month.

The calendar below includes information on screenings, panels and committee meetings taking place in October.

RSVPs are not required for screenings at the Writers Guild Theater. You only need your Guild membership card to attend all screenings. All screenings take place at the Writers Guild Theater (135 S. Doheny Dr., Beverly Hills) and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Unless otherwise specified, you can bring up to TWO guests to screenings. Solidarity Action: Labor Day Parade & Rally

Meet at 9:30 a.m., parade begins at 10 a.m. sharp. Parade route from 510 Broad Ave. is north on Avalon Blvd., 1 mile to Banning Park. At 11:30 a.m. the rally program officially begins with an opening ceremony including labor guest speakers and an introduction of elected officials concluding with music and dancing at the main stage.

The NAIWC represents the professional and creative interests of Native American & Indigenous writers. The Writers Guild Foundation, in partnership with Storyline Partners, hosts a virtual panel delving into contemporary experiences and depictions of systems facing and opportunity youth in film and television. Panelists include Aaron Covington (Creed), Sarah Lampert (Ginny & Georgia), and Shukree Tilghman (This Is Us). Moderated by Dr. Yalda T. Uhls (Founder, Center for Scholars and Storytellers at UCLA). The South Asian Writers Committee was created to enhance the visibility, access, employment opportunities, and community support of South Asian WGA members. WGAW’s Writers Education Committee has a broad mandate to develop programs that provide Guild members with practical, inside knowledge about how the industry works and how it is changing, emphasizing tips and tools to help writers succeed. The goal is to provide working knowledge for writers. Food & beverages served from 6 – 7 p.m.

We’ll honor the groundbreaking Apple TV+ comedy_ Acapulco_ with a screening of its much-anticipated series finale, followed by a lively Q&A with the creative team who made the series possible: Austin Winsberg (Showrunner), Eddie Cisneros (Creator), Sonia Gambaro (Development Executive), and other special guests TBC. Join us as we cover the entire life cycle of the series–from development, to writing the pilot, to the series finale. The Writers Guild of America West’s LGBTQ+ Writers Committee seeks to utilize its constituency as a resource to all writers who include LGBTQ+ characters in their work. Its members also wish to provide cultural and educational opportunities for WGAW members to nurture an understanding of how sexual orientation and gender identity affect the lives of writers; endeavor to provide networking and social activities enabling the WGAW membership to better know one another and create a greater demand for the writing services of LGBTQ+ WGAW members; and strive to generate a greater awareness within the Guild of sexual orientation (and gender identity) as a minority and, where appropriate, to identify and advocate against instances of homophobia, transphobia and/or discrimination within our industry. Established in 2002.

Monday Mash-Up Mixer Madness

Come experience what it’s like to be in a writers’ room: See how one idea can be developed into a comedy, drama, procedural, or genre series. You can observe mock writers’ rooms in action or sign-up the night of on a first-come basis to be a participant in one of the rooms, each of which will be led by an upper-level writer. Writers slated run each of the rooms are Robert Hewitt Wolfe (The Irrational), Jen Richards (Star Wars: The Acolyte), Dailyn Rodriguez (The Lincoln Lawyer), and Don Scott (The Neighborhood). Here’s how it works: Four groups of up to six writers will be given a set-up for a series and will have an hour to come up with the pilot logline, world, and series. Protagonist, setting, and genre will be selected from suggestions attendees have submitted as they arrive. Food & beverages served from 6–7 p.m.; event starts at 7 p.m. Join us for a fun, interactive night of story and connection that’s like charades meets Mad Libs; hosted by WGAW’s Genre Committee.

On Saturday, September 27, we’re opening the Library for a six-hour writing sprint with our library staff on hand to help with script requests and a community of writers providing the motivation you need to brainstorm, write, revise, or finish that script. Food and drinks will be provided. All proceeds benefit the Foundation’s Library and Archive and other outreach programs.
