Documentary Summit 2021: In Review

The 2021 Documentary Summit featured conversations with prominent filmmakers and writers behind some of this year’s most exciting films.

Each conversation focused on the documentary filmmakers’ writing, research and development process and also featured a live Q&A.

The lineup

First, Jack Youngelson told us about writing ALL IN: THE FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY, which explores the history of voter suppression, and the activists fighting for the rights of U.S. citizens.

Then, John Scheinfeld discussed his work on HERB ALPERT IS…, and his approach to writing about the extraordinary life of the legendary musician, artist, and philanthropist.

Finally, Amos Mac and Aisling Chin-Yee brought us into their writing process for NO ORDINARY MAN, a portrait of influential jazz musician Billy Tipton, who was posthumously outed as transgender.

About the WGAE Documentary Caucus

Our Documentary, Indie, New Media, and Animation caucuses are network communities. They promote and encourage the professional and artistic interests of writers working in existing and emerging fields in entertainment.

The Documentary Caucus works to enhance and protect the rights of theatrical documentary writers and filmmakers. Many documentary filmmakers must finance their projects themselves; consequently, the demands of filmmaking can often be difficult to navigate. We provide filmmakers with resources, networks, and tools to help them both realize their projects, and succeed in the industry.
