Saturday May 31, 2025The Writers Guild of America East invites members to attend events happening in Los Angeles and online this month.
The calendar below includes information on screenings, panels and committee meetings taking place in October.
RSVPs are not required for screenings at the Writers Guild Theater. You only need your Guild membership card to attend all screenings. All screenings take place at the Writers Guild Theater (135 S. Doheny Dr., Beverly Hills) and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Unless otherwise specified, you can bring up to TWO guests to screenings. WGAW’s Writers Education Committee has a broad mandate to develop programs that provide Guild members with practical, inside knowledge about how the industry works and how it is changing, emphasizing tips and tools to help writers succeed. The goal is to provide working knowledge for writers. Food & beverages served from 6 – 7 p.m. Special guests Brie Neimand (SVP of Development) and Steph Rosenthal (VP of Comedy Development) at Fox Entertainment Studios are set to appear at 7 p.m. meeting start.

Intro to Freedom of Information: Accessing Public Records with Jessica Huseman of the Friendly State News

Jessica Huseman will host a 90-minute course on filing a public records request. You’ll walk away with proven strategies for filing successful records requests, and fill-in requests that can help you start filing immediately. PLEASE NOTE: We are able to present this event for free due to a generous grant from the New York State Consortium for Worker Education (CWE). As part of this grant, WGAE needs to provide the CWE with information on who attends the events they fund. This information is necessary for the CWE to continue to receive their state funding – and, in turn, for them to continue to provide support for programs like the one you are attending. Completion of a Consortium for Worker Education (CWE) intake form is required for participation in this program. The link to the form will be provided to you in your confirmation email, and the form must be submitted prior to the event in order for you to attend; if you do not complete the form prior to the event, your registration may be cancelled.

The Disabled Writers Committee advances the visibility and employment of disabled writers while encouraging, celebrating, and endorsing accurate and diverse portrayals of disabled people in all areas of media. We also serve as an expert resource for various issues impacting and related to the disabled community. Established in 1982.

Writers on Writing looks at a screenwriter’s career and writing process, from their early introductions to screenwriting to their proudest career accomplishments–plus all the lessons learned in between. For this session, we’re joined by Dan Erickson, Creator, Executive Producer, and Writer of the hit Apple TV+ show Severance. We’ll learn how Dan got his start as a writer, how he came up with the premise for the hit psychological thriller, and how the writers’ room approaches developing the mysterious story arcs. This committee actively represents the professional, creative, social and economic interests of Latinx Guild members. Its mandate is to encourage Latinx writers to become more active within the Guild; and to raise the profile and perception of Latinx writers in the industry at large by creating forums that foster networking, collaboration, education, information exchange, employment opportunities and creative expression. The Writers Guild of America West’s LGBTQ+ Writers Committee seeks to utilize its constituency as a resource to all writers who include LGBTQ+ characters in their work. Its members also wish to provide cultural and educational opportunities for WGAW members to nurture an understanding of how sexual orientation and gender identity affect the lives of writers; endeavor to provide networking and social activities enabling the WGAW membership to better know one another and create a greater demand for the writing services of LGBTQ+ WGAW members; and strive to generate a greater awareness within the Guild of sexual orientation (and gender identity) as a minority and, where appropriate, to identify and advocate against instances of homophobia, transphobia and/or discrimination within our industry. Established in 2002.

WGF x Imaginable Futures – Character Creation Lab: Writing Student and Working Parent Characters

The Writers Guild Foundation hosts a virtual Character Creation Lab in partnership with Imaginable Futures focused on developing compelling character backstories and storylines through the lens of pursuing education and better career paths to support their families. Learn how narratives that depict social issues around higher education, early childhood education, childcare and caregiving, systemic racism, and access to upward mobility provide relatable stories to audiences and how to craft authentic characters with a toolbox of informed research and resources that represent the challenges of the work-family balance. Panelists include Michelle Denise Jackson (Maid) and Madeline Hendricks Lewen (Jane The Virgin). Moderated by Jenn Clark, Imaginable Futures Strategic Communications Lead.
