The Writers Guild of America, East and the New York Film Festival present WRITING PARTNERS, a panel about the dynamics of collaboration, moderated by Karen Han.

Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan collaborated on the script for WILDLIFE, which was also Dano’s directorial debut. The film premiered at Sundance, Cannes, TIFF and will screen at the New York Film Festival and London Film Festival. Kazan’s previous screenplay for RUBY SPARKS, in which she and Dano starred, was nominated for Best Screenplay at the 2013 Film Independent Spirit Awards. As a playwright, Kazan wrote “After the Blast” directed by Lila Neugebauer which played at the Lincoln Center. She has also had plays produced at the Humana Festival (“Absalom” in 2009), off-Broadway at the Manhattan Theater Club (“We Live Here” in 2011), and South Coast Repertory Theater (“Trudy and Max in Love” in 2014). She will next be seen in The Coen Brothers’ latest feature THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS. Her other credits include THE BIG SICK which garnered the cast a SAG Award last year, HBO’s OLIVE KITTERIDGE and THE DEUCE, THE EXPLODING GIRL, Richard Linklater’s ME AND ORSON WELLES, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD and IT’S COMPLICATED, among others. Dano will next be seen in Showtime’s limited series ESCAPE AT DANNEMORA starring alongside Benicio Del Toro and directed by Ben Stiller. He will also star in the upcoming Broadway production of Sam Shepard’s TRUE WEST alongside Ethan Hawke. Other acting credits include OKJA, LOVE & MERCY in which he received Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Awards nominations for his portrayal of The Beach Boys’ songwriter Brian Wilson, 12 YEARS A SLAVE, THERE WILL BE BLOOD, LITTLE MISS SUNSHNE, and BBC’s drama series WAR AND PEACE.

Mary Harron and John Walsh most recently collaborated on DALI LAND, which is now in pre-production and set to star Sir Ben Kingsley. The film follows a gallery assistant who helps Salvador Dali prepare for a big show in New York. Harron and Walsh have previously co-written the shorts ARMANI and SONNET FOR A TOWN CAR. Harron first film was the indie hit I SHOT ANDY WARHOL in 1996, followed by AMERICAN PSYCHO in 2000, THE NOTORIOUS BETTIE PAGE in 2006 and THE MOTH DIARIES in 2011. Her most recent film, CHARLIE SAYS, is about the women who killed for Charles Manson as they slowly come to terms with their crimes. The film premiered at the 2018 Venice Film Festival and will be released theatrically by IFC in the spring of 2019. Harron has also worked extensively in television, doing episodes of SIX FEET UNDER, BIG LOVE, THE L WORD and many other shows. Recently she directed all six episodes of the Netflix series ALIAS GRACE, adapted by Sarah Polley from Margaret Atwood’s novel (2017). Walsh premiered his first movie, ED’S NEXT MOVE, to critical praise at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival. Walsh’s second feature, starring Mary-Louise Parker, is PIPE DREAM, a gentle satire of the film business, dubbed “neo- screwball” by the New York Times. Since 2006, he has also served as an adjunct professor at NYU’s Undergraduate film program and for the MFA Film Program at Columbia.
