WGA Joint Statement on SEIU California President David Huerta

New York and Los Angeles – Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) and Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) issued the following statement:

Collective action and protest are fundamental rights, core to the labor movement and to our democracy. David Huerta, President of SEIU California and SEIU-USWW was injured and detained in Los Angeles while standing in solidarity with a workers’ protest. Now released, he faces an unjust felony charge for exercising those rights. Members of SEIU-USWW marched alongside writers when we struck in 2023, standing together as unions do for working people. We stand with our union brother David Huerta and with unions across the country in condemning this violation.

The Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) and the Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) are labor unions of writers working in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media and broadcast news. The Guilds negotiate and administer contracts that protect the creative and economic rights of their members; conduct programs, seminars and events on issues of interest to writers; and present writers’ views to various bodies of government.
