Assistant Arts Professor – Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing
The Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts is searching for an Assistant Arts Professor (four-year, renewable contract), with an interest in teaching undergraduate and graduate students. Position to commence in the 2022-23 academic year. We invite applications from professional writers of theater, film, and/or television/episodic series. The Department of Dramatic Writing offers a highly focused academic and professional writing program for undergraduate and graduate students, committed to the rigorous training of writers for theater, film, and television/episodic series. Our primary goal is to educate and train the writer through an integrated curriculum: a stepped series of core writing courses, a set of challenging theoretical and analytical courses in text analysis, and a group of production and professional training courses. Undergraduate training, in particular, is firmly rooted in a wide-ranging liberal arts curriculum that is designed to illuminate and educate the dramatist.
We are dedicated to educating writers as thinkers and artists who are serious, ethical, and responsible. We believe that it is our responsibility to encourage dramatic writers to find truth and to have the courage to tell that truth in their stories. We encourage the writers in our program to develop their own voices and their own visions.
We are actively seeking applicants that have a commitment to equity-forward teaching practices and who recognize and embrace the values of inclusivity and diversity, both in the classroom and in the field. This position is one of several new hires in Tisch School of the Arts focused on representation in the arts as part of the NYU Faculty Cluster Hiring Initiative.
The Assistant Arts Professor will teach four courses per year, mentor students, and participate in departmental and/or school-wide committees and service. A willingness to engage fully with the program as active members of the community is required. Ongoing professional work is encouraged and expected.
Salary, to be negotiated, includes an excellent benefits package. Faculty housing is subject to availability and may be available for Arts Professors not currently residing in New York.
Candidates must have a professional background in playwriting, screenwriting, and/or television/episodic writing. Scholars in these areas are also strongly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate should have university-level teaching experience, preferably in two of the three areas of theater, film, and television/episodic, or they should be able to demonstrate that they can translate their professional experience into dynamic teaching in these areas.
