Dylan Guerra

Candidate for Council, Film/TV/Streaming Sector

I joined the WGA-East in 2021… And shortly after, the industry contracted. Getting staffed on a television show, for a lot of us, now feels nearly impossible. Networks seem to be buying less and becoming more risk-averse; every writers’ room has become a “mini-room,” shutting out staff writers and story editors; and the pipeline of development has become extraordinarily clogged. All of this is preventing early-career writers from moving up the ladder from staff writer toward executive producer; we are caught at the bottom. Historically, early-career writers are less represented on the council. This leads to us being overlooked in contract negotiations, being left out of greater union planning, and seriously lacking opportunities to build relationships in our field. The lack of opportunity to build relationships from within the union has become a bigger and bigger issue as the industry has contracted—especially in TV, where a lot of writers getting staffed are people who have existing relationships with EPs, relationships those of us who entered the industry in a time of contraction haven’t been able to build. My goal on the council is to look out for those of us who are newer to the guild and to create more opportunities for emerging writers within the guild itself. I’m also looking to bolster our community engagement and communication so that the needs of our members can be heard more efficiently. I’ve been co-running the WGA Latine salon for the last two years, during which I’ve learned about the power of organizing and the amount of work it takes to achieve real visibility. I’ve also been a member of the WGA awards council for the last two years—being on that council has taught me about how important visibility is and how often we fall short of giving opportunities to marginalized voices. From my time as a captain during the strike, I gained a lot of experience in organizing and communicating; I was selected for roundtables on The Wrap, conversations with MSNBC, and other publications to help share the nuances of our fight for a fair contract. I want to bring my ability to communicate clearly and effectively to the council. I hope I get your vote so that those of us newer to this industry can have a seat at the table.
