Candidate for Council, Film/TV/Streaming Sector
My name is Felipe Torres Medina and I am running to represent you on the WGA Council as I’m sure the thing that says “(Council nominee)” next to my name says. I love this union of which I’ve been a member of the WGA East since 2019 when I joined as a writer on the soon-to-be-late Late Show with Stephen Colbert. I have worked my entire television career as a late night writer.
As a late night writer, I am part of a huge and vital part of the membership in our union. The health of this sector is a key part of the future of our union, our pension funds, and our healthcare plan. The world of late night is changing rapidly. Trust me, I know (hit me up if you have openings in your room in May.) I believe — as it was when the AMPTP suggested that late night writers get a day rate— that we are the canary in the coal mine of our industry. The companies continue to describe linear television as something that’s in a “clear and steady decline.” It is key for our union to respond to these changes. We must respond to streaming and to the sneaky introduction of AI into our jobs by companies efficiently and forcefully.
I love this union. It’s given me a chance to do what I love to do. It has made me feel welcome as an immigrant and a person of color. As work conditions continue to change – I will also add my voice on Council as someone who has been through the immigration system to draw attention to any developments that could make it harder for our members to meet visa requirements or stay in status. I hope to repay all the good the union has given me with my work on council.
